Movie Review

The Kid

by Rene Bouman
OzEvents Movie Reviewer

What an uplifting, amazing movie. How many times will Bruce Willis surprise, even amaze us with the depth of his talent. A must see movie for any man (or woman) who questions their choices in the journey of life.

Willis assumes the role of Russell, an image consultant with a fantastic career, a fabulously comfortable lifestyle and a workoholic, lonely existence. When he is given a wake up call in the form of a young eight year old boy (Rusty) who enters his life, he is forced into confronting his own lifestyle and the choices he has made since childhood. Initially rejecting the idea of having anything to do with the boy, he realises that the boy is, in fact, a younger version of himself.

An uplifting story unfolds, with the pair seeking to discover the reason for Rusty's appearance in his life. The journey is enriched by the dawning of realisation about the role the past played in creating his present, lonely existence. Emily Mortimer enriches the tale with her portrayal as the women who sees the innocence and joy for life that she knows is long suppressed within Rusty. With a superb performance as Russell's long suffering, yet unquestioningly loyal assistant, Lily Tomlin shows her unique talent for lifting the performances of those around her.

Spencer Breslin gives one of those performances that has star quality all over it. Breslin and Willis create a special synergy that provides the film with many of its special moments. This movie is entertaining, thought provoking and funny with a strong message about not losing contact with the Kid that is in us all.

The Kid takes a close look at Man's search for meaning and handles it with such honesty, that you can't help but get involved in it. To take a subject that raises such emotion and to handle it in such a sensitive, yet incredibly entertaining way is a rare talent indeed. John Turtletaub has given Disney a shot in the arm for producing such a quality movie that epitomises the values that Disney has stood for since Walt founded his studio all those years ago.

Highly recommended viewing
